8th Grade Bridge Project
Since 2005, we have replaced this activity with the West Point Bridge Designer,
v4 software, which allows students to design and test bridge configurations on the computer.

Specifications:
Bridge length = 24 +/- 1 centimeters
Chasm width = 22 +/- 1 centimeters
Material: spaghetti, cardboard plates and Elmer's glue
Balsa wood roadway: 5 centimeters wide x 25 centimeters long
Sand is added to a bucket suspended from the roadway until either the bridge deflects 1 cm from horizontal or until the bridge collapses.
