Problem to be Solved:

How do oil spills affect plant growth?

Hypothesis:

I believe the plants watered daily for eight days with 1/4 cup oil and 3/4 cup water will grow well and the plants with 1/2 cup oil and 1/2 cup water will grow but not live very long. I believe that the plants with 3/4 cup oil and 1/4 cup water will die. My control group will grow healthy and the best.

Procedure:

I used eight pots and planted ten beans in each pot. The eight pots were divided into four groups. But before the leaves appeared I only watered them. I started to pollute them when the leaves appeared. There are two pots per group. I measured the oil and water in one cup for all of the experiment. The first section is my control group which I only watered. The second section is my 1/4 cup oil and 3/4 cup water. The third section is 1/2 cup oil and 1/2 cup water. The fourth section is 3/4 cup oil and 1/4 cup water. I polluted them for eight days and measured them every day to see if they continued to grow or die.

Control Group:
Twenty plants received one cup water and no oil.

Variables:
Twenty plants received 1/4 cup oil and 3/4 cup water.
Twenty plants received 1/2 cup oil and 1/2 cup water.
Twenty plants received 3/4 cup oil and 1/4 cup water.

Materials:
Eighty garden beans.
Potting soil.
Motor oil.
Water.
Ruler.
Measuring cup.
Hand spade.

Conclusion:

I hypothesized that the control group would grow best and it did. I also hypothesized that the group with 1/4 cup oil, 3/4 cup water would grow well, but I was incorrect; they died before the eight days of the polluting was over. I did however correctly hypothesize that the other two groups would die within the eight days and they did. I have concluded that I have hypothesized 75% correctly. If I were to do the experiment again I would try different types of plants.

Biblical Application:

The hand of the diligent will rule, but the slack will be put to forced labor. Proverbs 12:24

This verse talks about laziness. We should be more responsible for our cars and homes by being aware and not lazy of an oil leak in a pipe or an oil leak in a car. If the people who steer the ships with the oil were more careful and aware of danger, they could prevent a huge accident from happening and save themselves from doing more work than needed. If people would fix leaks in pipes or cars they wouldn't have to clean up a bigger mess. You can prevent oil spills just by fixing or having someone fix a leaky pipe or car engine. We don't want to destroy the world we live in, but instead make it better.
