Problem to be Solved:

Which brand of diaper absorbs the most moisture?

Hypothesis:

The generic brand will absorb the most moisture because that brand of diapers weighs the most.

Variables:

The variables are the four brands of equal size diapers: Luvs, Pampers, Huggies, and a generic brand.

Control Group:

The control group is Luvs, which we use at home.

Equipment:

Two of each brand of diaper
Water at 36 degrees celsius
Triple-beam balance

Procedure:

1] Weigh one dry diaper.
2] Fill up a sink with water. Adjust the temperature until it measures 36 degrees celsius.
3] Put the diaper fully under the water for one minute.
4] Bring the diaper above the water and hold over the sink until it stops dripping.
5] Place the diaper on a plastic plate and with the plate and diaper on a triple-beam balance.
6] Subtract the weight of the plate from the weight of the plate with the wet diaper.
7] Calculate the amount of water the diaper held.
8] Calculate the percent increase in weight. Divide the water held by the diaper dry weight.
8] Repeat steps 1-8 for two of each brand of diaper.

Results:

Huggies brand diaper held more water than any of the other three brands. Huggies held almost 28 times as much water as its dry weight. Huggies had the second highest dry weight while the generic brand had the highest dry weight. The generic brand diaper came in second for amount of water held.

Conclusion:

Huggies absorbed the most water. Huggies diapers contain proprietary materials to improve water retention. To improve my project I could test which diaper stays dry on the outside the longest.

Biblical Application:

And she brought forth her first born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the Inn. Luke 2:7

This verse means that before there were diapers God made covering for the baby which is referred to as swaddling clothes. That keeps the baby's body protected.
