Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the Word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 1 Peter 3:1-3

Problem to be Solved:

Which shampoo for dyed hair keeps hair color from fading?

Hypothesis:

The hair that is not being shampooed will retain the most dye color at the end of the project because shampoo should strip the color out of the hair. I thought the Pantene Pro-V shampoo would be second best at retaining the most dye color because it was the most expensive at $4.79.

Equipment:

Thirty-five paper towels.
Enough hair to divide into five groups.
A place in front of the window that receives direct sunlight.
A comb.
Tablespoon (about 14.8 milliliters).
Teaspoon (about 4.9 milliliters).
One quart (about 0.9 liter) container.
Clairol Hair Dye in Soft Black.
Garnier Fructis shampoo for color-treated hair.
Pantene Pro-V shampoo for color-treated hair.
Suave shampoo for color-treated hair.
Herbal Essences shampoo for color-treated hair.

Procedure:

First, gather enough hair from one person to divide into five groups and buy the following shampoos for color-treated hair: Suave, Garnier Fructis, Herbal Essences, and Pantene Pro-V. Put the hair into five equal groups. Measure around the hair with a centimeter ruler to make sure that the circumference of the hair is the same for each section so it is basically equal. Next, dye the hair with black dye (all from the same hair coloring kit). Try to dye it as equally as possible by brushing it through with a comb. When brushing it through, make sure that there is an equal amount of hair between each comb tooth so there is not any more variables. After this is done, let the hair dry in a window where the hair can get direct sunlight. Flip the hair so that each side gets equal sunlight every other day. If possible, try to get morning sunlight. The next day, shampoo the four groups (not the control group) with its corresponding shampoo. When shampooing, first dampen the hair section with one tablespoon of water. Then put one teaspoon of shampoo and comb the shampoo through. Once again, make sure that there is an equal amount of hair between the comb teeth. After shampooing, rinse the hair in one quart of water for three minutes. When the time is half-way over, turn the hair over in the water. When the time is completely up, take the hair out and comb it without shampoo so it does not become very knotty once it dries. Do this every other day for fourteen days. On the days that you are not shampooing the hair, have five people judge the hair from darkest to lightest. Record the results, photograph the hair, and change the paper towels that the hair is resting on. At the end of the two weeks, average the data for the final results. Repeat the experiment.

Conclusion:

The hypothesis was incorrect. The dyed hair being shampooed with Herbal Essences retained the most color.  The hair with the Herbal Essences shampoo probably came in first because it contained certain ingredients that were beneficial for hair like oils that keep the hair from fading, especially in sunlight. The control group only came in third because it was faded by the sunlight, and the hair being shampooed did not fade as much because many shampoos for color-treated hair contain ingredients to protect the hair from ultraviolet rays. If this experiment was to be done again, it would be done for a longer amount of time so that it gave the hair more time to fade so that the results would be even clearer. Different kinds of hair would be used also.

Biblical Application:

Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the Word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes.1 Peter 3:1-3

This means that although it is good to take care of your body and try to look nice by doing things like dyeing your hair and using special shampoos to try to maintain the color, your main focus should be to be pure and show reverence to God.
