Problem to be Solved:
What descaler dissolves calcium buildup best?
Hypothesis:
CLR will dissolve the calcium best. CLR is designed to clean more that just calcium deposits.
Variables:
CLR, Limeaway and Oxy Power descalers
Control Group:
The control group is an attempt to descale a tile with distilled water.
Equipment:
Eight plastic cereal-size bowls
Eight ceramic bathroom wall tiles
Wash basin
Three descalers and distilled water
Tap water
Tums calcium tablets
Triple-beam balance
Procedure:
Prepare calcium deposits:
1] Label each of the eight ceramic tiles and weight each of them on the triple-beam balance.
2] Place all eight tiles laying flat in a wash basin.
3] Add tap water to the basin so that the water covers the tiles.
4] Add 10 Tums tablets to the water in the basin to add calcium to the water.
5] Let the water in the basin evaporate. Calcium deposits will be present on the tiles.
6] Let the tiles dry for five days.
7] Reweigh each of the eight ceramic tiles on the triple-beam balance.
Remove calcium deposits:
1] Place each tile in a separate plastic cereal bowl.
2] Cover two tiles with CLR, two tiles with Limeaway, two tiles with Oxy Power and two tiles with distilled water.
3] Let tiles soak in the descalers for 8 minutes.
4] Remove the tiles from the descalers and let the tiles dry for five days.
5] Reweigh each of the eight ceramic tiles on the triple-beam balance.
6] Calculate the weight lost by each tile.
Results:
CLR removed an average of 3.5 grams of calcium. Distilled water removed 0.25 grams of calcium.
Conclusion:
CLR removed the most calcium buildup. In further experimentation I would use more descalers and try different deposits like rust, or mineral buildups other than calcium.
Biblical Application:
In order for us to get into heaven we must be cleansed through Jesus Christ's blood which he shed for us on the cross.
In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Hebrews 9:22
